How to Begin

To begin cooking, visit Archilaya Gurpleferd at her bakery in the Arena. You may have to run a quick errand before you are allowed to begin the introductory cooking quest. You will be given the first of four cookbooks, The Art of Baking, and asked to prepare one of a selection of dishes. As with all crafting, this book must be equipped in your mind slot during this quest; this may be done by opening up your inventory and dragging the book to the equipment slot that has a picture of a brain. As you advance, you will receive the rest of the cooking books.

Equipment and Tools

There are many tools that chefs use. These tools are obtained through merchants, or as a reward for completing a quest. Different tools are available in different cites, so be sure to check what the merchants have to offer.

Fundamentals

Culinary Actions

All culinary actions require a book, a piece of equipment, and one or more ingredients, and produce one or more of a single product type. Sometime tools are needed, such as when mashing; sometimes no tools are needed, such as when heating.

To complete an action, you must first equip the proper book in the mind slot. To do this, open the inventory window and drag the desired book into the equipment slot that has a picture of a brain. If you have a modified user interface, this brain picture may have been changed to something else. After the proper book is equipped, you must equip a tool if one is necessary; most likely this will be something like putting a kitchen knife in one of your hands. Finally, all of the necessary ingredients must be placed in the proper piece of equipment. There are many different types of equipment, from the grill to a pot to the preparation table.

Each different type of action requires a specific tool and specific equipment. Over time you will memorize what tools and equipment are needed for what action types, as they will never change from one recipe to the next. For example, a cutting action will always require a preparation table and a kitchen knife, no matter what the ingredients are.

Once all of the action prerequisites are met and the ingredients are placed in the proper piece of equipment, with the exception of a combination action, you must wait for time to pass to allow the ingredients to be processed. Just as it takes time to boil water and cut a carrot in real life, so too does it take time to do the same actions in PlaneShift.

Chaining Actions

Some culinary actions are able to be chained. For example, using a preparation table and a kitchen knife, a pungent tuber may be cut into a sliced pungent tuber, then into a diced pungent tuber, and finally a minced pungent tuber. Once the proper tools are used and the pungent tuber is on the table, just continue to click the "Use" button to progress down the chain. Chaining actions using the pot happen automatically with time.
