I am usually on about 7am EDT till about 9am then i got classes and sometime i might be on during the day one thing you can do is just leave irc up and change your name /nick when you go away and they you can read what was said when you where away. If this does not work then maybe we can bug xordan to install SMF (forum) so we can talk and not bog down the ps forums. I will be back in a few hours if you want to stop by again later. (it is almost 8:30am right now)

Revision as of 12:27, 3 October 2006

Just wondering why you made the page chat it is not that usefull right now. and why did you make a category for commands? We are working on redoing a lot of the players guide and since none of us have seen on irc we dont know what you are thinking and you dont know what we are thinking. If you have time please stop off on the irc channel #planeshift-wiki to discuss this with us.

I created chat because a fully agree to what is mentioned in Kerol's Official PSWIKI thread:

"- Keep in mind that those docs should be understandable by 9 to 99 year old people - KISS (keep it simple and stupid)!"

According to my experiences it is simpler to find something if there are more paths leading to it.

I created the category "command" since I found it in the Special page: Wanted Categories. But, I agree: the two links referring to it may have been established unintentionally while drafting, making this category obsolete once.

What I'm thinking? I like PlaneShift. Not only the game, but also the idea behind. I like the Open Community and its spirit. I think it's only fair to pay back a bit, compared to the many helpful things I (we) received from the community until now. That's why I decided to contribute to this wiki.

Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with IRC (Does this disqualify me?). And, since I'm not a native English speaker, chatting in English is not my preferred way of communication. I think I can make my thoughts, ideas, arguments, etc. more clear in a "letter" form.

No worries, not using IRC does not diqualify you in any way, this is supposed to be a community effort after all. However, if you could learn to use it, it would help very much since it is easier to exchange ideas "live". In any event, using Talk pages or Discussion pages might yield the same result.

Now, about modifying articles, one can modify them however he/she wants. It is customary to leave descriptions usually, but again, unless the modifications are huge, there's no real need to justify every action. However, when modifying categories things get more delicate. It is fairly good practice to keep them in one place and not complicate things unnecessarily in my opinion (even if this is a small wiki with few articles).

just a small hint there is a search feature and i think it might help decrease the need for pages to point out each and every little detail like making a chat page or many catagories. Just remember we do not have unlimited space so if we can make a few pages as possible it might end up helping people in the long run. If you dont link a page to the main page most people will not see it or though a page that makes the link necessage. If you want help setting up irc just let us know and we can help you do that so you can work with us there also.

Installed Firefox extension Chatzilla. Tried to connect to Freenode --> [ERROR] msg.reconnecting.in ... repeatedly. Most probably since ports 6667 are definitely not open on our firewall --> takes a little time to open it.

Try port 8001

I visited #planeshift-wiki yesterday. There was not too much traffic there. Of course, chat is a real-time medium. But when is real-time for me, you, other folks around the world? And, due to the real-time character all information is gone once you log out, isn't it? (Or are there logs available to be able to look through the history of a channel?) So, I think more durable discussion media are far better, like forums or the discussion pages here.
